A coalition of non-governmental organizations and civil society groups have sent a letter in support of Net Neutrality to the EU Council. In it the groups share their view and argue that net neutrality is a core precept of the internet without which the EU and its citizens will lose both financially and in terms of human rights.
Recent moves by key members of the EU leadership have sent panic waves across the ranks of Net Neutrality supporters, who are seeing all the hard work that went into making these comprehensive rules going to waste as the legislation may be watered down in its final form.
A recent proposed change to said rules would allow, for example, the existence of “slow” and “fast lanes”, a concept which is currently also under consideration in the US. Supporters of Net Neutrality, ourselves included, argue that such changes would be disastrous for the future of a digital Europe.
The EU Council is currently finalizing the rules that will apply to internet service providers across the Union, and this letter alongside yesterday’s comments from the EU’s digital chief, urge representatives to stand strong and keep the peoples’ real interests in mind.
