Microsoft has yet to release a version of Office for iOS and Android users, although that may change in 2013, if you believe the rumors. However, people who subscribe to the services from the company called CloudOn have been able to access a version of Office for the iOS-based iPad as well as some Android-based tablets for some time now.
Today, Venture Beat reports that CloudOn has launched version 2.5 of its cloud-based Office service. Among other additions, it allows iPad and Android tablet owners a way to put in annotations in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. There"s also a larger version of Ribbon UI for Office in this new release, along with an activity stream for files and support for more languages.
The article said that since CloudOn launched in January, it has seen two million downloads for its app and over one million active customers that are using the Office software on iOS and Android products. While that"s small compared to the tens of millions of Office users, it"s clear that there is indeed an audience out there that wants a mobile version of Microsoft"s productivity suite. That"s likely why Microsoft is including a Windows RT-version of Office with its upcoming Surface tablet.
