Revealed last year, We Happy Few has seen few updates to its progress since it joined the Xbox Preview Program in July 2016. Compulsion Games has officially revealed the date when we can expect the final release will ship, among other interesting developments surrounding the Bioshock-like game.
In a press release - and a new trailer - We Happy Few finally received an official launch date of April 13, 2018. The game which was first touted as exclusive to the Xbox One and PC platforms, will now also launch on PlayStation 4. This is part of a "grander vision" for the project, as described by the developer in the announcement, after mentioning its new partnership with Gearbox:
"Our team was humbled by the initial public reception to We Happy Few, and delighted to have this chance to make it bigger. We’re longtime fans of Borderlands, and we’re excited to be part of a line-up that also includes games like Homeworld and Fortnite. Gearbox believed in us from the very beginning, and we think this partnership will make it possible to create the game that our community expects,"
Beyond support for the platform from Sony, the developer noted that gamers who purchased the Preview title will receive an upgrade to the full release with no extra charge. The Early Access price was $29.99, which will give backers of the project a hefty discount on the new retail price of $59.99. We Happy Few will also receive a Collectors Edition; which will include a few posters, alarm clock, the iconic in-game mask, a vinyl copy of the soundtrack, neon signage and a hand book. The collection, however, will not include the game and will come in limited quantities with a retail price of $149.99.
Beyond the new release window, gamers who pre-order the game on all supported platforms will get access to the alpha version, letting you experience a portion of the game before launch. PlayStation 4 pre-order incentives include an exclusive theme as well.
We Happy Few is the tale of a plucky bunch of moderately terrible people trying to escape from a lifetime of cheerful denial in the city of Wellington Wells. In this alternative 1960s England, conformity is key. You’ll have to fight or blend in with the drug-addled inhabitants, most of whom don’t take kindly to people who won’t abide by their not-so-normal rules. Discover the retrofuturistic city’s dark history as you play through the intertwined narratives of three quietly rebellious citizens of Wellington Wells, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, as they face their pasts, prepare for the future, and engage in activities that aren’t exactly status quo in the artificially enthused society.
Backers on Xbox One and Steam will get a new update called "Life in Technicolor" which went live yesterday; it adds Joy Effects, reworked AI and a new user interface, and will be the final update to the game, until the official release next year. In April, we also reported on a new movie adaptation of We Happy Few by dj2 Entertainment, which is currently also working on a project based on the Sleeping Dogs franchise.
We Happy Few is available for purchase on the Xbox One Store with a 15% discount for those interested.
