The Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert remasters that EA announced in 2018 have been getting a steady stream of developer updates that share information on the progress being made on the project. Today, a new video was shared that shed light on the status of the full motion videos (FMVs) that were present in the original games, and how they will show up in Command & Conquer Remastered.
EA Producer Jim Vessella recounts the riveting tale of his journey to find the original uncompressed footage of these FMVs in the video seen above. Sadly, this journey had ended unsuccessfully, and the only footage that remained was the super-compressed 320x200 resolution files straight from the games" innards.
The solution the developer had settled on after discussing the situation with the community was to upscale the original videos using an AI algorithm. As a result, the resolution of the cinematics have been bumped up as much as possible without losing clarity, while the frames per second have been increased from 15 to 30, and finally, the audio has been cleaned up. Head to the 11:20 mark on the developer video above to get a side by side comparison of the old and upscaled footage.
Moreover, Command & Conquer Remastered will include a Bonus Gallery section for both games that will unlock pieces of recently uncovered B-roll footage from the original FMVs, as well as concept art, unreleased audio tracks, and other bonus materials when completing missions. The campaigns themselves will also include some extra cinematics that were originally exclusive to the PlayStation versions.
Vessella also teased another Command & Conquer Remastered announcement for Monday. This could be when we will finally get a release date or at least a beta announcement for the highly-anticipated double remaster.
