Scaleway, a French cloud-centric company, recently shared a very interesting story on its official blog. In the blog post, Scaleway CEO Yann Lechelle said that his company had lost an SSD over a year ago during a transit journey from one of Scaleway"s data centers to another. This happened despite the transport journey has been described as a "secure" one.

But perhaps even more incredulously, the firm has stated that its lost SSD has been found thanks to a philanthropic YouTuber who was able to recover the drive from a classified site. The identity of the hero YouTuber hasn"t however been disclosed.

This particular YouTuber was apparently preparing a topic for his viewers regarding data erasure and data persistence and probably wanted a spare drive for demonstration when he came across the lost SSD on one of those classified sites. The YouTuber has assured Scaleway that the drive has been returned unscathed and the data inside it is still in its original state with no copies and such existing.

Thanks to this incident, the company claims that it has performed a full audit of its transport process and has put in necessary changes wherever possible. The storage and media being transported have now been upgraded with GPS-enabled trackers inside hardened cases.

The matter is still being investigated by the police. You can find the original story here.
