ComScore: Microsoft's US smartphone share rises slightly

The share of the US smartphone operating system market by Microsoft rose slightly between February and May 2012, according to new data from ComScore. Their figures show that Microsoft went up from 3.9 percent in February to 4.0 percent in May.

ComScore"s numbers also show a massive drop for Blackberry developer Research in Motion. The data shows RIM"s smartphone market share in the US went down from 13.4 percent in February to 11.4 percent in May, a drop of two percentage points. Nokia"s Symbian OS also showed a drop, from 1.5 percent in February to 1.1 percent in May.

Google was on top of ComScore"s data. Its share of the smartphone market went up from 50.1 percent in February to 50.9 percent in May. Apple was second, going up from 30.2 percent in February to 31.9 percent in May. Overall, ComScore said that 110 million people in the US now own some kind of smartphone in May, up five percent compared to February.

Samsung was the biggest mobile phone maker in the US with 25.7 percent of the market in May. LG was second with 19.1 percent, followed by Apple with 15 percent in third place. Motorola was fourth with 12 percent and HTC was fifth with 6.1 percent.
