Corning"s Gorilla Glass is the toughened glass of choice for a majority of electronics manufacturers. The company"s flagship offering has been available for smartphones, tablets and laptops for a very long time, and is now in its fifth generation. The same reliable glass will soon be available for wearables like smartwatches and fitness bands, as Corning has unveiled the new Gorilla Glass SR+ for such devices.
The company has revealed that Gorilla Glass SR+ started as Project Phire, which aimed at creating a glass solution with scratch-resistance similar to luxury materials (likely Sapphire) while retaining the damage resistance of Gorilla Glass.
Wearable devices are more exposed to the elements than smartphones or tablets and are more prone to scratches, bumps and other damage. The introduction of Gorilla Glass SR+ should make things better for users; however, no currently available devices are using it yet and it will take some time for the toughened glass to become mainstream.
Corning has revealed that Gorilla Glass SR+ is now commercially available and new products using it should be launched towards the end of the year.
