Corning has introduced the newest version of its Gorilla Glass, promising better impact and scratch resistance, clearer displays and more secure devices.
Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is the company’s latest technological advancement in terms of screen and glass covers. For those unfamiliar with the brand, know that Corning’s resistant glass is used in many of today’s smartphones, laptops and mobile devices. And with each iteration Corning has tried to make Gorilla Glass more resistant to scratches and drops – common occurrences in a world where we’re using our devices constantly.
Of course Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, and the company highlights how its new design allows screens to survive higher drops, even on rough surfaces like concrete. The main selling points are:
- Up to 2x improvement in damage resistance over Corning Gorilla Glass 4
- Up to 4x improvement over alternate glasses
- Up to 1.8x improvement over Gorilla Glass 4 in drop performance on rough surfaces
- Survives up to 80% of the time from drops at 1.6 meters
Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 will show up in devices starting later this year, with flagships like the upcoming Galaxy Note 7 likely to feature the new technology.
