Hey Cortana, why are you defragmenting my SSD? It might not be too long before Cortana will actually be able to answer that question, as Microsoft is looking to bake tech support into the virtual assistant on Windows 10.
At its Ignite conference, Microsoft showed off Cortana’s abilities to search the web and documents and display data in a useful way, all while interacting via voice controls. This is by no means new, but the digital assistant is slowly getting better and that"s encouraging to see. However, the company also showed off a different feature, one that arguably, might be a lot more useful to a lot more people: tech support.
Yes, it looks like Cortana might replace you and fulfill all your family’s, or employees’, tech support needs in the near feature. As shown by Joe Belfiore on stage, the virtual assistant will be able to answer support queries such as “How can I connect to the internet?” or “How do I share my screen?” While this may not sound revolutionary, giving users the ability to search and solve their own problems without having to rely on someone else, can go a very long way in delighting Windows 10 users.
Of course, more complicated tasks will still require an actual human, but most queries will be easily handled by the digital assistant. And in case Cortana doesn’t work, or is simply not enough help, users will also be able to use the customer support feature, that’s directly integrated into Windows 10.
Whichever way they do it, it looks like Microsoft is serious about supporting users and helping them whenever they need it, and this is a very encouraging sign both for the company and for the Windows 10 operating system.
