Could a successor to the 41MP Lumia 1020 be on the way? "Absolutely", says Microsoft

Next week, fourteen months after its launch, the Nokia Lumia 1020 will reportedly reach "end of life" status. In practice, this simply means that the device will no longer be manufactured, and sales will continue only as long as existing stocks last.

The Lumia 1020 impressed us considerably when we reviewed it last year, thanks in no small part to its remarkable 41-megapixel PureView camera. But as the last units are sold to buyers, no replacement for the device has yet been announced. In fact, the highest-resolution camera available in Nokia"s latest wave of devices is the 20MP module used in the Lumia Icon/930 and 1520

But it seems that Microsoft could be working on a successor to the 1020 - and we suspect that quite a few people would be eager to get their hands on such a device.

TechRadar spoke with Microsoft"s Jo Harlow, Corporate Vice President for the company"s Phones Business Unit, and asked her if a new handset with the imaging prowess of the Lumia 1020 could be on the way. "Absolutely," she said. "We"re not [at the] end of the mission in camera technology, or in computational photography. We continue to invest in that area to bring the next greatest thing in high-end imaging."

While not an explicit confirmation that a "Lumia 1030" is on the way, it certainly sounds like Microsoft has something in the works to take the place of the 1020, although Harlow didn"t comment on when we should expect it to arrive.
