It"s been in the works for the past few years but now the UFO-like design for Apple"s massive new headquarters building is cleared to be constructed. This week, the City Council members of Cupertino, California voted to allow Apple to start building their new campus that will hold 14,200 employees and spread out over 2.8 million square feet.
The Mercury News reports that the city council voted unanimously (with one abstention) to approve the new Apple campus building. While there is another vote scheduled for November 15th to make everything official, it is considered a formality.
During the discussions about the building over the past two years, the structure itself was not an issue but all the traffic that will be caused by the new headquarters did cause concern. Apple has promised to underwrite many road improvements in Cupertino and also pledged to increase the number of employees that use public transit services from 30 to 34 percent.
The new headquarters was a major project for the late founder and CEO of Apple Steve Jobs. In 2011, in one of his last public appearances, he spoke to the Cupertino City Council to go over the details of the building. Apple now hopes to start clearing land for the headquarters by the end of 2014 but it could be a few more years before the actual structure is completed.
