The homebrew scene for any mobile OS is arguably just as important as vendor support. Without the jailbreaking community, iOS would have suffered for years and without rooting, millions of Android users would be stuck to carrier branding and feature locking. With that said, the homebrew community for WP7 is a requirement for the tech-heavy users to jump onboard the platform.
It was not long ago that the first WP7 unlocker was released. While unlocking your phone initially didn"t serve much benefit, it now has a purpose. Chris Walshie, of the ChevronWP7 unlocker group, has just posted up that custom ringtones will soon be available to those who unlock their device. While custom ringtones may not sound like a ground breaking feature, it"s a small step in the right direction for the homebrew scene.
As the platform becomes more popular, we can expect to see more features to be brought to the WP7 platform that Microsoft did not include. It is always important to know that unlocking your phone is done at the risk of the user voiding their warranty and potentially bricking their device. As the homebrew community for WP7 is still in its infancy, widespread support is not as available as it is for the Android or iOS platforms.
