The popular CyanogenMod Android ROM will be running Ice Cream Sandwich in the near future, if developer estimations are to be believed. According to the official @cyanogen account on Twitter, users of their ROM should be checking back around January 2012 for the Ice Cream Sandwich-flavored build.
Tweeting on Tuesday, the developers said to "check back in two months". In doing so, they confirmed that they were working on CyanogenMod 9, abbreviated to CM9. For those not aware, CM8 was likely intended to appear on Android 3.0 "Honeycomb", though since the source code for it was closed, the developers couldn"t get to work building CM8. Despite this set-back, the team is still working on creating an ICS build of what has turned out to be one of the most popular ROMs for the phones it supports.
For those not aware of what CyanogenMod is, it is a custom ROM for specific Android phones. Originating on the T-Mobile G1, the concept was taken to other Android handsets and has been customized further. Among the tweaks provided for CyanogenMod, themes can be installed to completely alter the phone"s interface and overclocking the processor on the phone is also a possibility, offering increased performance.
