D-Link and Skype have introduced a USB adapter which allows users to communicate over the popular VOIP service using their standard corded and cordless telephones, a move which could woo many users who find the concept of conversations through their PC microphones and speakers too cumbersome. The technology will be on display at each company"s respective booths at CES 2006 in Las Vegas, which begins this Thursday.
The adapter, model DPH-50U, allows users to operate their telephone through Skype as well as a standard phone line, and switch between them seamlessly. If the user receives a Skype call while on a standard call he or she can easily switch lines much like any typical call waiting feature. Conference calling is also supported, and a lighted display indicates whether the incoming call is from a traditional telephone or Skype user.
