DayZ, the zombie-themed mod for the military shooter ArmA 2, launched just three months ago in April. The sandbox game became a viral hit and causes sales of ArmA II to take a massive jump. Even now, the game remains the best selling PC game on Steam thanks to DayZ.
Eurogamer.net reports today that DayZ"s creator, Dean Hall, told an audience at the UK Rezzed event that the mod now has 420,000 players. That number is expected to jump up to at least 500,000 by the end of July.
About 10,000 concurrent players are online playing the mod on average, and it reaches 22,000 concurrent players at its peak. According to Hall, "We now have 1000 servers. We"re getting 110,000 players in a 24 hour period at the moment." He also said that he has lost five of those servers due to overheating issues.
At the moment, Hall is planning to add AI dogs to the DayZ mod, saying, "It"s just there"s a problem with the implementation and there"s been so much more that"s been more pressing," He also would like to turn the DayZ mod into a stand alone game, and that the game could be of the free-to-play variety.
