Debian 9 has received its fourth point release

The Debian team have pushed out the fourth point release of Debian 9. With Debian 9.4, users can grab the newly spun disk images with all the latest patches included. If you already have Debian 9 installed, or have Debian 9 installation media then there’s no need to throw away any discs you might have, just install the latest patches offered to your Debian 9 installation and you’ll seamlessly be upgraded.

In its announcement, the Debian project said:

“The Debian project is pleased to announce the fourth update of its stable distribution Debian 9 (codename “stretch”). The point release mainly adds corrections for security issues, along with a few adjustments for serious problems. Security advisories have already been published separately and are referenced where available.”

Some notable packages which have updates to fix bugs, included with this release, include the anti-virus, clamav; the printing software, cups; debian-installer, which ships with a slightly newer kernel; and the package system flatpak has also been updated to a newer upstream release.

Other well known software packages received security updates too including Firefox, Thunderbird, Tor, Wireshark, OpenSSL, and Transmission. Unfortunately, several bits of software had to be removed from the repositories including the popular bitcoin wallet, Electrum, which will now have to be obtained from the Electrum website. The Debian project blamed the removal on security issues and that it was “broken due to upstream changes.”

Although the announcement is already online, the new release isn’t linked on the front page at the time of writing but it should become available over the weekend.
