Dell had quite a disappointing earnings call yesterday, with earnings falling sharply. This last quarter that ended November 2nd, their net income fell 47% to $475 million compared to the $893 million in the same quarter last year.
However Dell is trying to keep investors calm saying they have a real chance of going big with Windows 8 tablets for enterprise. It"s these Windows 8 tablets that will have to compete with the iPad and Android offerings.
Stephen Felice, president and chief commercial officer, said he had been meeting with lots of corporate customers who need to prioritize security and manageability with a tablet roll-out in their environment. Specifically products like the Dell Latitude 10 are resonating well with possible customers.
Later on, CFO Brian Gladden took up the same call saying that the company is encouraged by the reaction to the Latitude 10 and they see this as a profitable product in the commercial space.
The Latitude 10 is an Intel Atom based 10.1” tablet running a full version of Windows 8 and selling for $649. Dell also creates the XPS 12 Convertible but that is double the price, as well as the XPS 10 which only runs Windows RT – so no support for desktop apps.
Does Dell really have a good reason to be optimistic? We’ll see in the following months as businesses decide whether Windows 8 is a good fit for them, as well as whether or not Dell’s products are the right way to go.
What about you folks? Has your company upgraded to Windows 8 and/or tablets recently or are you still on a version of XP/Vista/7?
