Perhaps more than any other manufacturer, Apple seems obsessed with making its devices as thin as possible. Its latest iPhones are the perfect example of this, with the iPhone 6 slimming down to a profile of just 6.9mm (ignoring the ugly rear camera extrusion).
But just as there are much thinner smartphones than those of Apple, there are also thinner tablets than its iPads, and Dell"s latest addition to its range makes even the iPad mini look a bit chunky. In fact, it"s even thinner than Samsung"s slender 6.6mm-thick Galaxy Tab S.
The Venue 8 7000 Series is, according to Dell, the world"s thinnest tablet, and at just 6mm-thick, we"re inclined to believe them. Even more impressive is that the device features an 8.4-inch OLED screen with Quad HD resolution.
In fact, its resolution is more accurately described as WQXGA; at 2560x1600, it packs in even more pixels than the "textbook" definition of Quad HD (2560x1440px). That resolution gives it a pixel density of 359ppi - even higher than Apple"s iPad mini with Retina Display (326dpi).
The Android tablet also incorporates Intel"s RealSense "depth camera", which can map a 2D image with 3D capabilities, allowing to it understand the relative size, position and distance of objects in a room, for example. As SlashGear points out, this would enable users to do simple things like change the focus of a photo after it"s taken, or to perform more specific tasks, such as being able to measure objects in a photo precisely (e.g. for landscaping or renovations).
The new tablet will run on a quad-core Intel Atom Z3500 processor, and will feature integrated 4G LTE connectivity - but that"s the end of what we know about its specs, for now. The device will be released "in time for the holidays", but we"ll have to wait a bit longer to find out the rest of its specs, as well as details of pricing and availability.
