Diablo III game director leaves team, stays at Blizzard

In May 2012, nearly four years after it was originally announced, Blizzard finally released the long awaited action-RPG sequel Diablo III. This week, the man who lead the development of the game, Jay Wilson, announced he was departing the Diablo team.

In a message board post on the Battle.net forums, Wilson stated that he had recently celebrated his seventh anniversary on the Diablo III team but that he had " .... reached a point creatively where I"m looking forward to working on something new." Wilson will still be staying with Blizzard but details of what he will be working on going forward have not been announced.

Wilson was the frequent target of Diablo III players, some of which were highly critical of the gameplay and design decisions that Wilson approved for the game. In his message, Wilson did make note of those issues with the game"s players, saying:

I feel I have made many mistakes in managing that relationship, but my intent was always to provide a great gaming experience, and be as open and receptive as possible, while still sticking true to the vision the Diablo team has for the game.

Wilson"s departure means that someone else will be in charge of Diablo III development going forward. That includes the creation of an expansion pack for the game, which Blizzard has admitted is in the works but has not provided any details.
