Diablo III is still one of the most anticipated game releases of 2012. Unfortunately, fans of the first two games in Blizzard"s fantasy action-RPG series will have to wait a bit longer to get their hands on the third installment. On Thursday, as part of Activision Blizzard"s quarterly financial results, the company admitted that the game would now be released sometime in the second quarter of 2012.
In early 2011, Blizzard said they were targeting a release for Diablo III by the end of that year. Then in September, the company admitted the game"s release was pushed back to "early 2012". Today"s announcement means that Diablo III won"t be released until, at the very least, April 1 and possibly as late as June 30.
Blizzard"s director for Diablo III, Jay Wilson, hinted strongly at a new delay for the game a few weeks ago when he announced that the development team would be making some rather major design changes to Diablo III. In explaining the reason for the new delay, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime said:
We have implemented changes which will greatly improve the game experience and final release will live up to the highest expectations. We expect launch to be a big opportunity for Blizzard. More details will be announced in the coming weeks.
Diablo III was first announced way back in June 2008, so it"s more than possible that the game could come out exactly four years after it was first revealed.
