Dice Holdings acquires Slashdot, SourceForge and Freecode

As previously anticipated, Geeknet has finally sold its on-line media business to Dice Holdings Inc, a job listing company for tech professionals (owner of the Dice.com portal) that from now on will manage the Slashdot.org, SourceForge.net and Freecode.com tech-focused web sites.

Geeknet’s on-line business was acquired for 20 million dollars in cash, Dice announced on its corporate web site. In 2011, the press release states, the acquired “online media properties generated $20 million in revenues”.

Dice’s new properties include two of the most known (and prominently tech-focused) sites of the Web: Slashdot is the user-generated news site spotting the famed “News for nerds. Stuff that matters” motto, it launched 15 years ago and it is visited by 3.7 million unique users each month; SourceForge.net is one of the leading open source code repositories, with 40 million monthly unique visitors and more than 300,000 software projects hosted.

The third site, Freecode.com, is “one of the largest indexes of Linux, Unix and cross-platform software” attracting nearly 500,000 unique visitors each month, Dice says. As for the reasons behind the acquisition, Dice CEO Scot Melland said that “the acquisition of these premier technology sites fits squarely into our strategy of providing content and services that are important to tech professionals in their everyday work lives”.

“The SourceForge and Slashdot communities will enable our customers to reach millions of engaged tech professionals on a regular basis and significantly extends our company’s reach into the global tech community”, Mellands further stated in the company’s press release.
