Last week, Research in Motion reported the bad news that smartphones with the upcoming Blackberry 10 operating system would be delayed from a previously announced first half of 2012 time schedule to sometime in late 2012. Now a new story from Boy Genius Report, citing unnamed sources, claims that the situation surrounding the Blackberry 10 delay may be worse that previously thought.
During the financial conference call with investors last week, RIM"s co-CEO Mike Lazaridis claimed the reason for the delay was that the company was waiting to get new chips that would add both dual core processors and connections to the faster LTE wireless networks for their Blackberry phones. However, BGR claims that Lazaridis was in fact lying when he said that was the reason for the delay. According to their unnamed source, "RIM is simply pushing this out as long as they can for one reason, they don’t have a working product yet."
The story claims that the upcoming 2.0 software update for the Blackberry Playbook tablet is also a "window" into the current state of the Blackberry 10 OS. The source claims, "Email and PIM is better on an 8700 than it is on BlackBerry 10."
RIM has certainly been hit with multiple issues in the past year, including losing market share in the smartphone business to Apple and Android-based phones. While there are millions of users who still have Blackberry phones the company, and in particular its CEOs, need to stop making excuses and start producing results or those millions of users will go elsewhere in 2012.
Update: AllThingsD.com reports that a rep from RIM has called the BGR story "inaccurate and uninformed".
