British consumers will soon have yet another option to choose from when it comes to picking a mobile network, as Dixons Carphone is preparing to launch its own mobile and data services. The UK retail giant has signed a deal to use the Three network to deliver its services, and intends to attract customers with the promise of contract flexibility and extra connectivity.
A key component of Dixons Carphone"s offering will be the ability to regularly switch your price plan, rather than being stuck with a fixed number of minutes, texts and megabytes each month.
The company"s Graham Stapleton told the Financial Times:
"We will have something different from what is available elsewhere in the market with a more personalized service for mobile customers that will let them tailor their price, minutes and data to their changing needs."
But Dixons Carphone is hoping to capture even more market share with a unique level of support for connected "smart home" devices. When the company was formed by the merger of Dixons Retail and Carphone Warehouse, it made it clear that the Internet of Things (IoT) would be a major focus for expanding its business. With consumer mindshare of IoT and smart homes steadily growing, Dixons Carphone has plenty to gain by establishing itself as the go-to brand in this space.
The company"s announcement comes just days after Sky announced that it will launch its own mobile services on the O2 network in 2016. But the O2 network may well be under new management by then, as Three"s parent company, Hutchison Whampoa, is attempting to purchase O2 for up to £10.25bn.
