If there is one thing that can be said about DJI, it"s that the firm is constantly pursuing a way to better its products. Whether that is through the introduction of entirely new devices or improving the experience of its existing lineup by releasing software updates, it is more focused than ever when it comes to pursuing the pinnacle of excellence. At IFA 2017 in Berlin, the company announced two new iterations to its UAV line, the Mavic Pro Platinum and Phantom 4 Pro Obsidian, along with a new feature for its smaller drone, the Spark.
After launching the Mavic Pro in October of last year, DJI has introduced an improved version of the drone that offers better performance and a quieter experience. The Mavic Pro was a breakout hit, giving users a more compact option, but compromising very little compared to its other drone offerings in its consumer line. For the first time, operators could take a quality piece of kit, throw it in a backpack and obtain great results.
While the overall body and design stay the same, you can expect an 11 percent increase in flight time with the new Platinum model compared to its predecessor, which ups the total flight time to 30 minutes. Not only will Platinum owners experience longer flights, but they will also own a drone that produces 60 percent less noise pollution. This was achieved by integrating new electronic speed controllers (ESC) and utilizing newly designed propellers. If that wasn"t enough, the new model will come in a new colorway with its outer shell coated in a matte gloss platinum color.
Although the Mavic Pro shifted the consumers" attention away from its other lines, the Phantom 4 was the go-to UAV for those that wanted superior quality. The firm"s introduction of its Phantom 4 Pro Obsidian model signifies that it is still committed to the platform. Not only does the new model get a fresh set of paint, it also features a new magnesium, electroplated, and anti-fingerprint coated gimbal - which requires a higher standard when it comes to manufacturing. Although the gimbal gets a little fancier compared to other Phantom 4s, the camera stays the same, still utilizing a 1-inch CMOS sensor that can shoot 4K at 60 frames per second.
Along with the new hardware revisions, DJI also announced an update for its Spark drone, giving it a whole new way to shoot photos. The Sphere mode allows users to shoot panoramic photos with a fisheye lens effect, which you can see a sample of above. In an age where sharing is essential, DJI has implemented a way to share Sphere photos directly to social media sites. The new shooting mode will arrive in a forthcoming firmware and DJI GO 4 mobile app update.
For those interested in the latest from DJI, the Mavic Pro Platinum can currently be pre-ordered from the firm"s website for $1,099, along with the Phantom 4 Pro Obsidian which will be priced at for $1,499. Both will begin shipping in September.
