If you aren"t familiar with the name John Carmack, you have either never followed gaming culture or didn"t grow up playing games like Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, Rage and their sequels. As co-founder and lead designer of id Software, Carmack was responsible for a number of technological developments in the gaming industry. In 2013, Carmack took an interesting departure from the company he founded to join OculusVR. This was mainly due to a disagreement by id Software"s parent company Zenimax, which was resistant to the idea of exploring the use of virtual reality technologies.
Following Facebook"s $2 billion dollar purchase of Oculus VR, John Carmack is now officially (albeit indirectly) an employee of Facebook. While there will be a shift in ownership, Facebook maintains that the company will operate as its own separate company and Carmack will still remain CTO. Facebook maintains that Oculus VR will remain independent of the social networking sites core business, but rumors have already surface that Facebook will begin branding its logo and load a custom UI into the Oculus Rift hardware.
The Oculus Rift is currently is available as a pre-order directly from the Oculus VR website.
