Today, id Software executive producer Marty Stratton shared an update regarding the future of Doom Eternal, revealing that the studio is now working on a brand-new game mode to offer a horde experience, a single-player one. However, this comes as a result of dropping its plans for the long-promised Invasion Mode and pivoting resources towards horde.
"As many are aware, we intended to release a free Invasion Mode update for the game; however, the unforeseen consequences of the pandemic and remote working impacted the progress of development for this addition," said Stratton in a statement posted on Twitter regarding the dropped feature. "With these factors in mind, we have decided to redirect our focus from Invasion Mode to creating a totally new single-player horde mode."
The new horde mode will present "more of the diversity and challenge" players expect from id"s Doom games, with the studio getting inspiration from Doom Eternal"s expansions and master levels feedback.
The now canceled invasion mode was announced for the title even before its launch. The multiplayer mode would have offered a Dark Souls-like invasion experience where players could hop into another"s campaign to take over a demon and attempt to defeat the Slayer there.
The id team is also working on a Battlemode overhaul that will see "a more competitive, rank-based structure, a number of gameplay and balance updates and another new map." More details on all the upcoming content to Doom Eternal is expected to show up at QuakeCon this August.
