The upcoming first-person shooter from id Software, Doom Eternal, won"t feature any microtransactions or any kind of in-game store. The information was revealed by the game"s creative director, Hugo Martin, in a Facebook comment (via PC Gamer).
According to Martin"s post, everything in the game is unlocked by simply playing it. Even cosmetic items, which don"t affect gameplay in any way, can be acquired with XP, which is earned by playing the game. Many times, these kinds of items are the preferred means of monetizing a game after its launch, since they don"t actually give players any technical advantage over those who choose not to spend extra, but even that will be free.
Microtransactions have become very common in the videogame industry, and while it"s most often a way to fund continued development of free-to-play titles, some paid games still include them. The lack of any further monetization in Doom Eternal will likely be a breath of fresh air for fans.
Doom Eternal is set to release on March 20, after it was delayed in October of last year. At launch, it will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch version coming some time later. Recently, the company explained that the Switch version is coming later in order to give Panic Button time to further refine the experience on Nintendo"s hybrid.
