Microsoft has announced it will be bringing in a new person to head up its Microsoft Research International division. The company said today that computer science researcher Dr. Jeannette Wing will become its new vice president and head of the well-known research wing of the company beginning in January.
The press release states that Wing will report to Microsoft"s Chief Research Officer Rick Rashid in her new job. Wing received her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 2007 to 2010 she was the assistant director of the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Directorate at the National Science Foundation.
Microsoft states:
Within the computer science community, Wing is well-known for her advocacy of “computational thinking,” an approach to problem solving, designing systems and understanding human behavior that draws upon concepts fundamental to computer science. She sees it as a “universally applicable attitude and skill set that everyone, not just computer scientists, should be eager to learn and use.”
Microsoft Research has been at the forefront of developing technology for many years, and research projects from that division sometimes make their way into Microsoft products, including the Fresh Paint art app for Windows 8.
