Dummies are giving away a Microsoft Surface tablet ... really

A couple of weeks ago, everyone at Microsoft got word from Steve Ballmer that they would be getting a free Microsoft Surface tablet. Now one lucky person will be able to feel a little bit like one of those Microsoft team members, and its all because of some "Dummies."

In this case, it"s the folks behind all those Dummies "how to" books with the yellow covers that you see in bookstores (if you still go to bookstores, that is). The Dummies brand has been around since 1991 and reached its peak in the late 1990s, thanks in part to sales of books that attempted to teach people how to use their PCs.

The Dummies team is coming out with two new titles very soon: Windows 8 for Dummies, and Surface for Dummies. To promote the books, the company is holding a contest where the grand prize is not only copies of both books but a Microsoft Surface tablet itself. The giveaway started earlier today and will run though December 31.

The contest is open to residents of the US, Canada, and the UK. People can submit an entry once a day until the end of the contest and a winner will be drawn at random in mid-January. The contest states that the approximate value of the prize package is about $350, but we wouldn"t read too much into that number, since we suspect that"s more of a guesstimate as to the Surface"s real price than any kind of confirmation from Microsoft.
