EA"s rather small portfolio of Star Wars games is set to expand by two more experiences according to a new report. Sources speaking with Kotaku had revealed that a sequel has been ordered for the massively successful Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order single-player experience.
Respawn Entertainment will once again be developing this Star Wars game, though no more details were shared in the report. The first game managed to smash launch records at EA, and has sold over eight million copies already, making a sequel extremely likely. Meanwhile, the Montreal-based EA Motive studio is reportedly working on a separate Star Wars title, said to be "a smaller, more unusual project."
Kotaku further reports that a third Star Wars game - in development at EA Vancouver and Criterion Games - was canceled in spring last year, which was a Star Wars: Battlefront spin-off project. Codenamed Viking, this project was reportedly planned for a fall 2020 release in time for the next-generation Xbox and PlayStation consoles, but the "logistical challenges of cross-country game development" had caused it to fall behind. According to Kotaku, EA had finally axed it when it was clear the game wasn"t going to hit the planned release window.
This isn"t the first time reports have come out regarding canceled Star Wars games at EA. Back in 2017, EA shut down Visceral Games, where an untitled action-adventure Star Wars project was being developed. Leftovers from this project were then taken over by EA Vancouver, which reimagined the title as an open-world experience, though this was also reportedly canceled last year.
As for Criterion, It was recently revealed that the studio is going back to developing Need for Speed games for EA, shifting Ghost Games to become a support studio.
