EA's excuse for paywalls in Battlefront II is Reddit's most hated comment

Everybody hates loot boxes and paywalls, especially in premium games. One such example is EA"s Star Wars: Battlefront II, currently in beta and set to launch on November 17. While the game finally offers a single-player campaign mode, unlike its 2015 predecessor, it also features a seemingly pay-to-win microtransactions model with a grinding and unrewarding progression system.

While EA made some changes to the gameplay, it appears that gamers still aren"t happy. Now, the company"s contrived excuse for Battlefront II"s gameplay mechanics has become the most downvoted comment in Reddit"s history.

Reddit user "MBMMaverick" recently posted about how it was strange that the franchise"s iconic character Darth Vader was locked behind a paywall in a premium game. To this, EA"s official response was:

The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes.

As for cost, we selected initial values based upon data from the Open Beta and other adjustments made to milestone rewards before launch. Among other things, we"re looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we"ll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay.

We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets.

Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can.

Needless to say, the response has gathered a lot of criticism from gamers, with many claiming that they"ll be reaching out for a refund. While EA hasn"t responded again since, its original comment has already managed to gather over 398,000 downvotes in the past 23 hours - and the number is only rising - crowning it as the most downvoted comment in Reddit"s history. According to this list, the second position is held by a comment that sports a miserly 24,000 downvotes.

As of now, it remains to be seen if EA will revert its position after this latest onslaught of criticism, but we"ll likely find out more when Star Wars: Battlefront II launches in a few days.
