I can see a bad trend starting here...
Internet café chain EasyInternet has dropped its appeal against a High Court ruling that found it guilty of copyright infringement for downloading music.
EasyInternet, founded by Stelios Haji-Loannou, will pay £210,000 (which includes £80,000 damages and legal costs) to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).
In January 2003, EasyInternet was found guilty of allowing customers to download music from the web and to copy onto CDs for £5 after the BPI, which represents leading record labels including Sony Music, EMI and Universal Music, launched legal action.
Stelios Haji-Loannou always maintained that his company was not breaking any laws and that he was considering appealing on the grounds of "fair use" laws that allow net users to download music if it was for their own personal use.
But the two parties have now agreed to settle the case and Easy Internet has confirmed that it would not run unlicensed CD burning services in the future.
