Earlier this year, eBay moved to officially transition from PayPal to Adyen as its back-end payments system management platform following the spin-off of PayPal as its own separate business in the second half of 2015. As Adyen"s service works in the back end, eBay is now adding Apple Pay as one of its checkout options on the new payment platform.
The San Jose, California-based e-commerce company announced today that beginning in the fall customers will be able to buy goods using Apple Pay on iOS and Safari. Keep in mind that this will be part of a limited rollout of the new payment experience in the U.S. and customers may only check out items on eBay from participating sellers.
Steve Fisher, Senior Vice President of Payments at eBay, said:
Apple Pay is one of the most ubiquitous forms of payments and provides users with an easy, fast and secure way to pay. Offering Apple Pay as a form of payment on eBay is the first step in providing more choice and flexibility in payment options to our tens of millions of buyers.
With the new integration, eBay customers will have a quick option to complete their transaction within the app instead of logging into a separate payment site. Apple Pay will be just one of the many payment options eBay is planning to offer on its platform, according to the company.
Next year, eBay plans to extend the new payments experience to more users and expects to get the majority of its customers to use the checkout option by 2021.
