Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon took the stage at the PlayStation booth booth during E3 2014 to discuss the latest entry in the franchise, "Mortal Kombat X."
The game will take place during a span of 25 years after the events of the 2011 title, "Mortal Kombat." Boon wanted to go beyond re-skinning the game with next generation graphics and instead opted to create a an entirely new game with improved gameplay elements, a robust character roster, interactive backgrounds and more.
One of the exciting new features to debut in "Mortal Kombat X" will be character variations, Boon said. This will give players the ability to choose one of three variations of each character; the variation will determine how a character plays and determine its fighting style. The introduction of character variations will add a unique layer to the gameplay that will be especially interesting when players fight against each other as the same character.
Boon also revealed a couple of new characters that will join the veteran roster in "Mortal Kombat X." D"Vorah (a half insect, half human with stingers), Cassie Cage (Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade"s daughter), and Ferra/Torr (a unique character that will be a two person team that will play as one). Ferra/Tora will work in tandem with each other and could possibly be the most unique addition to any fighting game.
Lastly, Mortal Kombat X will now have interactive backgrounds. This will allow gamers to do a variety of actions, such as wall climbing, being able to engage with background props during a fight, and making use of random spawned items as weapons. There is no doubt that these features will bring a new element, which will make each fight more exciting and unpredictable.
While the game is still in development, what we saw on the show floor looks great. Boon stated that the game will run 60 frames per second at 1080p. The game does not have an official release date, but Boon said it will arrive sometime in 2015, when it will be available on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
