The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn author Brandon Sanderson may be the latest high profile fantasy writer to enter the gaming space. In a livestream, Sanderson revealed he had received a package from Bandai Namco Entertainment, the publisher behind Dark Souls series and Elden Ring, containing gaming merchandise as well as an invitation to work with the company in the future.
"They are interested in perhaps doing something together, is what that says," Sanderson said. "I am as well actually. This is how I roll. I actually have a pitch for them in the back of my head, so I may have to send them my pitch and see what they think." The author later added that his pitch is for a Soulsborne (a name given by fans for FromSoftware games) project.
If a game does materialize from the partnership, it will be interesting to see whether the story will be set in Brandon Sanderson"s popular Cosmere universe or a brand-new one made just for a game world.
A Song of Ice and Fire novelist George R. R. Martin was famously attached to Elden Ring to create the world alongside Hidetaka Miyazaki. Keep in mind that being a massive Japanese publisher, teaming up with Bandai Namco doesn"t mean Sanderson will specifically jump into a FromSoftware game"s world building plans. It is an exciting development nonetheless for fans of the author, who recently raised a record setting $41 million on Kickstarter for four "secret" books.
Sanderson has previously expressed interested in teaming up with CD Projekt RED for an RPG. While those plans did not seem to go anywhere, unlike then, now it sounds like both parties are very keen on working with each other.
