In November, Frontier Developments announced their Kickstarter campaign for Elite: Dangerous, seeking funds from the public to help create a new game based on the classic space trading game Elite. This week, the Kickstarter campaign ended successfully.
The original goal was £1,250,000 and while it appeared at one point the project might not reach that goal, a last minute push of donations took the campaign over the top. It ended up with £1,578,316, or over $2.5 million.
David Braben, the creator of the original Elite and the lead for Elite: Dangerous, stated:
We are really grateful for all the amazing pledges. May be cheesy, but quoting Churchill (the politician not the annoying dog in the adverts...) - "This is not the end. It is not the beginning of the end. But it is the end of the beginning." Now the fun really starts!
Frontier Developments have promised that Elite: Dangerous will be an "amazing space epic with stunning visuals, incredible gameplay and breath-taking scope", and will support both single and multiplayer modes. Due to the amount raised, it has also announced plans to make a Mac version in addition to the PC port. The game will be released sometime in 2014.
