Less than nine months after it passed the 100 million mark, the second largest independent online music retailer (after Apple"s iTunes Store) claims it has sold more than 150 million downloads. EMusic sells songs in MP3 format, which eschew any sort of Digital Rights Management technology. The subscription-based service, meaning users pay a monthly fee to download a corresponding fixed number of songs, focuses on independent artists and labels. According to president and CEO David Pakman: "Even as research shows that overall paid download growth is slowing, eMusic continues to attract new customers and sell more music."
