Evernote announced today that it will be bringing its desktop app to the Windows Store. In doing so, the company will end support for its Evernote Touch app.
The app will launch on August 2 and if that date sounds familiar, it"s because that"s the date that the Anniversary Update will begin rolling out. It"s not a coincidence either, as the Update will bring support for Win32 apps - when converted using Project Centennial - to the Windows Store.
Once you"re upgraded to the Anniversary Update, the Evernote Touch app - which was created for Windows 8.1 - will be updated to the Win32 app. In case you"re still using 8.1, there are no worries. Evernote says that it won"t be shutting off any of its apps anytime soon.
This is also good news for users of the Evernote app, which is offered in Windows Phone 7 and 8 flavors (obviously, the Windows Phone 8 app is the one that Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile users get). Those apps should continue to work into the foreseeable future.
Evernote recently increased pricing on its Premium plan - which now costs the same as Office 365 - and added limitations to the free tier. Porting the desktop app over to the Store, rather than continuing to support Evernote Touch, is likely an effort to consolidate the company"s apps.
Nevertheless, Evernote will be one of the first third-party Win32 apps to appear in the Store, as it will be available on launch day. You can grab the app here.
