Facebook undeniably is that one website on the Internet where everyone gets connected; friends, family, enemies, ex-lovers, or even strangers can cross their paths on the famous social networking website. And over time, the website has grown, introducing Messenger, an "On This Day" throwback feature, and even a "legacy contact" that gives someone control of your Facebook account after you die.
But apparently, these improvements are nowhere near to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg"s dreams and plans about the said social networking website. The Facebook chief holds a monthly public Q&A about the website, where he tries to answer questions from anyone who posts questions on his Facebook page. While at it, he shared his vision on the website, saying he believes that the technology that will let us send an emotion or feeling to someone else just by thinking is on its way. Long story short, he"s referring to the idea of telepathy.
Zuckerberg dubbed the idea as the "ultimate communication technology." He describes further:
...we"ll have the power to share our full sensory and emotional experience with people whenever we"d likeā¦.you"ll just be able to think of something and your friends will immediately be able to experience it too.
Furthermore, during the public Q&A, Zuckerberg received questions from a few famous people. Physicist Stephen Hawking actually posted a question on the Facebook page, asking him: "Which of the big questions in science would you like to know the answer to and why?" Zuckerberg answered by saying he is curious about the idea of living forever, curing diseases, how the brain really works, and the possibility of a mathematical law behind social relationships.
Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger on the other hand throws the CEO a question about fitness. He asked how the Facebook boss finds time to stay fit, in the midst of being very busy with his work on the social networking site. Zuckerberg shares that he tries to make it to a point to exercise at least three times a week, and that he enjoys running with his dog because "it"s like seeing a mop run."
Lastly, responding to other questions, he talked about the evolution of communication, and technology"s impact on it:
We used to have to be with someone in person. Then we had these bulky computers at our desks or that we could carry around. Now we have these incredible devices in our pockets all the time, but we only use them periodically throughout the day. In the future, we"ll have AR and other devices that we can wear almost all the time to improve our experience and communication.
He commented further on how people"s lives are improving as communication tools are being enhanced, stating the possibility of building "richer relationships" with people close to us. He said:
We know about what"s going on in the world and can make better decisions in our jobs and lives. We are also more informed and can make better decisions collectively as a society. This increase in the power people have to share is one of the major forces driving the world today.
As a bonus, he also answered a question why he invented the Facebook Poke feature, and said: "It seemed like a good idea at the time."
In a world where people can reach each other in the blink of an eye, and where technology is really fast-paced, Mark Zuckerberg"s vision for Facebook and the future of communication might not be that far from being a reality. Whatever the future may hold, social networking sites like Facebook are here to stay, and help us stay connected with people we love (or hate).
