Facebook denies reports of Yahoo search deal

This weekend, the Internet was abuzz about a report that claimed Facebook and Yahoo were in discussions that could lead to Yahoo using Facebook"s technology for its search page. Today, Facebook slammed down those rumors as untrue.

News.com reports that, according to a statement from the company, "People expect a better search experience on Facebook. We are working on improvements to better meet those expectations but are not in talks to enter into a new search partnership."

The rumors, which began with a story on the UK-based Telegraph website, claimed that Yahoo"s new CEO Marissa Mayer had been talking privately with Facebook"s chief operating office Sheryl Sandberg. It"s possible that those talks did in fact take place but that a search agreement was not among the items discussed. As we mentioned before, Yahoo is in the middle of a 10 year agreement with Microsoft that has its Bing search engine powering Yahoo"s search results.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has recently admitted that the company has "a team working on" some kind of improved search technology for the service, saying, "Facebook is pretty uniquely positioned to answer the questions people have. At some point we’ll do it."
