Without warning, Facebook changed the displayed default email address of all users to its own @facebook.com email addresses, as first noted by Gervase Markham.
The generated @facebook.com email address is either based on a Facebook vanity URL, if one was created for that account, or the random number ID assigned to the account, which seems as unhelpful as it is obtuse.
Emails sent to these @facebook.com email addresses will be redirected as messages in the Facebook account"s message inbox, without an actual email notification to the email address associated with the account.
A spokesperson for Facebook said that the site is "rolling out a new setting that gives people the choice to decide which addresses they want to show on their timelines."
"Ever since the launch of timeline, people have had the ability to control what posts they want to show or hide on their own timelines, and today we’re extending that to other information they post, starting with the Facebook address," spokesperson Andrew Noyes wrote to Forbes in an email.
Users who wish to reinstate their actual email addresses on their Facebook profile pages can follow these steps: On your profile page, scroll down to the "Contact Info" box and click the Edit button. Hide the @facebook.com email address from your Timeline and replace it with one of your real email addresses.
