Facebook introduces 360 degree photos and HD video to Messenger

Facebook is rolling out an update to its Messenger app which will allow users to send 360 degree photos and HD videos to others. The new features are part of previously announced plans to make Messenger into a “more visual” product.

Once you’ve updated Messenger to the latest version, you’ll be able to send and receive the aforementioned types of media. When others send those types of media, you’ll be able to easily identify them, Facebook says:

“Both 360 degree photos and HD videos are easy to identify in Messenger. You will see a compass icon on the right-hand side of a panoramic photo. The videos will also be easily identifiable with a HD or SD marker. If you’d like, you can change the quality right from the marker on the lower right side when in full screen mode.”

Availability of the new features depends on where you reside. While 360 degree photos are available all around the world on both iOS and Android, HD videos are only available in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, UK and the U.S. on both Android and iOS.

How do readers feel? Should Facebook turn Messenger into a “more visual” product?
