In the aftermath of the 2016 Presidential elections in the United States, and as a result of Congressional inquiries into the effect of fake news in influencing people"s opinions and the results of the elections, Facebook last month announced it would be releasing a new tool that would show if a user has been influenced by such propaganda. That tool is now live.
A principal architect of such "fake news" is believed to be the Internet Research Agency (IRA), a Russian company that is alleged to have used social networking sites to influence public opinion in the United States through fakes accounts and proxy publications.
The new tool by Facebook focuses exclusively on content supposed to have been created by the IRA, indicating if a person followed or liked a page or account that was controlled by it. The tool also works for the social media giant"s other big site, Instagram. Its utility does not, however, extend to simply viewing or sharing content from the offending accounts.
The tool can be accessed from Facebook"s Help Center and shows not only the pages and accounts that the company believes are run by the Internet Research Agency but also the dates of your interactions with them.
