Facebook is in talks with Major League Baseball to stream one game per week during the 2017 season, according to a new report from Reuters. The deal, if finalized, could give Facebook an edge, allowing them to attract more users its platform.
Facebook and Twitter have both in the past pushed to sign deals with sports rights owners to live stream games. For social media platforms, sports is a major draw for traffic, as it is one of the few types of content people still watch live.
While Facebook pursues streaming deals, competitor Twitter already established a working relationship with the National Football League last year, allowing them to stream ten weeks of "Thursday Night Football" games. The MLB deal could give Facebook a leap ahead, as the firm has already secured a deal with Univision Communications Inc. to stream 46 games in English from the Mexican soccer league, Liga MX.
