Facebook to kill Facebook Connect

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced today that Facebook will be launching their new Open Graph protocol and APIs, eliminating Facebook Connect, according to Mashable, via the F8 conference.

Facebook Open Graph is set to lockdown on their APIs available to developers, where third-party websites will be able to gain access this.  With the new Open Graph protocol and OAuth 2.0 standards, Facebook will limit the information third-party websites will be able to gather, and open up their social graphs to users, such as the Like feature across the web.

Microsoft is among the 30 or so companies that have been approved by Facebook to gain access to individuals information, including general information about you and your friends - all of which will allow an opt-out feature when launched.

Microsoft and Facebook have also launched their new Docs.com service, a new social office, allowing users to share documents with each other.

The Facebook Connect name and service will be eliminated, or possibly revised in the future, with a new name.  Facebook did not mention if they have any plans to replace the Facebook Connect service.
