Facebook treats its users to some Halloween-themed updates

It"s that time of year when, like it or not, some people like to get their spook on for Halloween. No doubt, many memories will be captured and shared with family and friends thanks to smartphones and social networks.

This year, Facebook is getting into the swing of things with a couple of fun changes to its services.

The first change involves Facebook Live. When broadcasting live, you can choose from a number of Halloween masks, plus two limited-edition masks: a pumpkin and a witch. Masks can be chosen using the image wand in the top left of the screen once a live broadcast has commenced.

Masks will be rolled out for Facebook Live users on iOS in the US, UK, and New Zealand over the next few days. After Halloween, some masks will continue to remain available although the company has not disclosed specifics.

While it appears that everyone else will miss out this Halloween, the company said:

"In the coming months, we will make masks available to people sharing live video via Android devices and in more countries."

The second update targets the range of reaction buttons, initially rolled out back in February this year. While the range of reactions have remained the same, they have been replaced with:

  • a skeletal thumbs up (Like)
  • a candy heart (Love)
  • a laughing witch (Haha)
  • a ghost (Wow)
  • Frankenstein (Sad)
  • a scowling pumpkin (Angry

Again, although unsurprising, users of the Windows 10 apps seem to have been completely overlooked. While the Facebook app for Windows 10 PCs includes video live streaming, masks have not been made available, and the app for Windows 10 Mobile lacks live streaming capability altogether. Both versions of the app also appear not to have been updated with the Halloween-themed reactions.
