Last December, Facebook partnered with Google to announce an initiative that allowed users to move media files directly to Google Photos. The tool initially rolled out to users in Ireland and last month, Facebook made it available to users in the USA and Canada.
Earlier today, Facebook confirmed that the tool is now rolling out Facebook users worldwide. The tool allows users to export media files to Google Photos and can be accessed from Facebook settings. You can follow the steps below to use the new data transfer tool:
- Open Facebook and click on the down arrow on the top right corner. Navigate to Settings > Your Facebook Information > Transfer a Copy of Your Photos or Videos. Alternatively, you can visit facebook.com/dtp to directly access the tool.
- On the transfer page, click on "Choose Destination" and select "Google Photos" from the drop-down menu.
- Select the media type you want to transfer and click "Next".
- You will then be redirected to Google sign-in page. Enter Google credentials to sign-in and click "Allow" to give Facebook permission to access Google Photos.
- You will now be redirected back to the Facebook transfer page. Click "Confirm Transfer" to start the transfer process.
The Facebook Data Tool was announced as a part of the Data Transfer Project (DTP) which was announced back in July 2018. The initiative includes companies like Google, Apple, Microsoft and Twitter and was designed to allow users to transfer data easily between services. Facebook has said in the past that the company plans to integrate more services as well as allow users to transfer other pieces of information including their contacts and friend lists to another platform without compromising their privacy.
