After an excruciatingly long Twitch livestream, Bethesda Softworks finally teased its upcoming game Fallout 76. While the stream didn"t give much away, it led many to initially believe that they were either getting a Fallout 3 or New Vegas remaster, or this was going to be a new entry in the core franchise.
However, this might not be the case, with a report claiming that Fallout 76 is actually an online survival RPG à la DayZ.
Citing three unnamed people "familiar with the project", Kotaku reports that Fallout 76 was initially envisioned as a multiplayer version of Fallout 4, however, it has now changed to become an online survival RPG with a proper storyline and quests. These sources also claim that the game is in development not only at Bethesda"s Maryland studio - responsible for the likes of Skyrim and Fallout 4 - but also its new studio in Austin.
This Austin studio was formerly known as BattleCry Studios, and was working on an online game called BattleCry, which was canceled. It was then merged with Bethesda Game Studios.
While details regarding the upcoming title are currently scarce, it is important to note the significance behind the name Fallout 76. The "76" stands for the name of the facility that has been mentioned in previous Fallout installments, where it is revealed to be a vault that would only open its doors to the wasteland 20 years after the nuclear attacks. Considering even the original Fallout took place almost a century after the Great War, Fallout 76 could give us a much earlier glimpse at the state of the wasteland if it did open up after a 20-year lockdown. We will likely learn more at Bethesda"s E3 conference on June 10 at 6:30pm PT.
