Microsoft is apparently planning to release a new accessory for its Surface 2 and Pro 2 tablets that will allow their content to be beamed and displayed on big screen televisions. The Federal Communications Commission site has posted up documents filed by Microsoft that reveal the existence of the Surface Wireless Display Adapter.
The site shows that the device is a HDMI dongle that presumably will connect to an open port on a TV. The Surface 2 or Pro 2 tablet could then connect to the dongle, via a dual-band Wi-Fi antenna, and then show anything running on the tablet on the larger screen.
While the Surface tablets do have Miracast support, it"s a given that not all TVs are equipped with this relatively new wireless display technology. This dongle is clearly being made for older televisions. Of course, the FCC filing doesn"t have any info on when the Surface Wireless Display Adapter will be released or how much it will cost. We have contacted Microsoft to see if they wish to comment on this FCC filing.
The previously promised Surface 2 with LTE wireless support was recently approved by the FCC, but we are still waiting for the company to launch its long awaited Power Cover accessory for the Surface Pro and Pro 2 models.
