Files UWP is a third-party file management app for Windows 10 that you can use as an alternative to the built-in File Explorer. The app intends to ‘modernize’ the File Explorer experience with Fluent Design along with offering extra features such as instance tabs.
The app, currently in preview, offers a tabbed layout with multiple layout modes (with more on the way). The developer claims ‘unrivaled file access performance’ and in my initial impressions, the assertion is not misplaced.
The app is completely open-source, and the code is available on GitHub. Luke Blevins, the developer behind the app, has called out the developer community to support the app with feedback items or pull requests on GitHub to make it even better.
At the moment, Blevins plans to implement key features such as better OneDrive support, search options, and support for WSL in the near future. The goal is for Files UWP to leave preview in a few months.
You can download the Files UWP app free from the Microsoft Store here.
